JULY 2008

Our meeting for July was the Joint Meeting at Wellow, this is our annual get-together with the Notts & Derby and Sheffield Groups. For the last two years we have met at the Durham Ox. Food, drink and a good size car park. Just what we are looking for. This year we also got rain, it rained all the way from Lincoln to Wellow, it rained all the evening and it rained all the way back to Lincoln. I was really pleased to be in the Ruby at least the wet only drips in. Other brave souls arrived in open cars!

On Sunday 6th some of us attended the Summer Gathering at Car Colston organised by David Cope. This is always an interesting and well-run event. As usual the day included a 40-mile scenic run round the local area with a coffee stop in Waltham-on-the-Wolds. The weather was cool and wet; I think we missed the summer when we were in Holland! The Vernon Wood Memorial Trophy (best Austin 1900/1939) was awarded to RE Taylor for his lovely 1933 Opal two seater.

I spent an educational day with Mel Baxter and his Box saloon during the week. I have never really got to grips with the Austin Seven charging set up but Mel asked me to have a quick look at his dynamo problem. Bill Dixon had lent me a copy of the ‘Electrical Guide for the Austin Seven’ by Harry Hales. This was a great help. Is it still available I wonder? In the end we worked out it was a combination of out of adjustment cutout and a dodgy dynamo. I am sure the non-standard ignition light did not help us. This having no resistance winding and a 12v bulb fitted. Though I am assured it does work satisfactorily normally. Unlike the light in our Ruby it did not fade in and out but was on or off. Perhaps someone more knowledgeable would like to comment? Having fitted a proven dynamo and adjusted the spring tension on the cutout the original dynamo went back on, no charge. Fit Mel’s spare dynamo, charging, cutting in and out. Yippee. Tidy up and have another cup of tea. Many thanks to Bill and Ian Bancroft for advice via the telephone during the day. We had also tried a proven ignition and lighting switch as the one in the car was also suspected at one time, it was fine though.

We have sold 60 tickets for our BBQ on August 9th, so far, but they are still available, see advertisement elsewhere in the magazine.
